L.A. auto show: Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder gets lighter and faster
The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante weighs 143 pounds less than the Gallardo Spyder.
Lamborghini is releasing one last single before the new album comes out, and it's called the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante.
Through the use of carbon fiber and other lightweight materials, the engineers from Sant'Agata Bolognese were able to bring the new convertible to a dry weight of 3,274 pounds. That's 143 pounds lighter than the outgoing Gallardo Spyder and almost 100 pounds lighter than the convertible Ferrari F430.
The lightweight supercar will get power from a direct-injection, 5.2-liter V10 engine making 570 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. That's good for 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds on Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tires. Peak power of the V10 comes at an ear-splitting 8,000 rpm.
The V10 has an aluminum crankcase including dry-sump lubrication and a cylinder angle of 90 degrees. To ensure ideal combustion, the engine has an adjustable intake manifold and continuous control of the camshafts. The 109.6 hp/liter engine will pull the Spyder to a top speed of 201 mph.
Power is transmitted though Lamborghini's paddle-shifted E-Gear setup with electronic management. The six-speed unit shifts faster than any human could, and it's also responsible for Lamborghini's Thrust Mode launch control. Thrust Mode is programmed to put starting revs at about 5,000 rpm before launch with minimal wheelslip.
Power is channeled through a central viscous coupling and a 45 percent limited-slip differential on the rear axle. Normally power is channeled with a ratio of 30:70 to the front and rear axles.
The fun is brought to a stop with aluminum eight-piston calipers up front and four pots in the back. As an extra, Lamborghini can fit fade-resistant and lightweight discs made from carbon fiber in front.
The subtle body changes to the Spyder are a result of Lamborghini putting wind-tunnel experts together with designers from Lamborghini Centro Stile. The front bumper was remodeled, and trapezoidal frames outline larger air intakes. This improves cooling and increases downforce on the front axle. The underbody shell was modified, and a rear spoiler is optional.
Lamborghini is one of the technology leaders in the lightweight carbon-fiber world. It first used the polymer in 1983 when building the Lamborghini Countach. The latest creation, the Sesto Elemento, weighed in at 2,202 pounds.
No news yet on pricing for the superlight super-convertible, but expect it to cost a bit more than the current Gallardo Spyder's sticker price of $221,000.
